Plastics for Data Centers and Semiconductors Thailand

Thailand is in the middle of a genuine construction boom in two of the most demanding industries in the world. The country's data center market is projected to grow from roughly 1.45 billion USD in 2025 to over 6 billion USD by 2031, and Thailand's national semiconductor roadmap targets the country as a regional chip design and manufacturing hub, backed by trillions of baht in planned investment through 2050. For engineers, EPC contractors, and procurement teams building these facilities, one decision quietly affects fire safety, uptime, and long-term reliability more than almost any other: which plastics go into the walls, ducts, tanks, and tools.

This decision determines whether a facility passes insurance and safety review at all.

Why Fire-Rated, Chemical-Resistant Plastics Matter So Much Here

After a series of costly semiconductor fabrication plant fires in Asia, the insurance industry developed a standard called FM 4910, alongside a related standard, UL 2360, specifically to define which plastics are safe enough for use in cleanroom tool construction. These standards test for flame spread and smoke generation, since a small fire or even a false smoke alarm inside a cleanroom can shut down production and cost a fab millions of dollars in lost wafer output. Semiconductor fabrication facilities in the US are further governed by NFPA 318, the standard specifically written for fire protection in semiconductor plants.

The materials that consistently meet these standards are a short list: ECTFE, PVDF, CPVC, and specially compounded fire-retardant polypropylene. These materials are also the ones best known for chemical resistance, purity, and long service life, which is exactly why they show up again and again in both semiconductor fabs and data centers, two facility types where fire risk, chemical exposure, and equipment uptime all matter enormously.

Here's how PP, PVDF, and ECTFE each fit into that picture, and where SIMONA, distributed in Thailand exclusively by SPVC International, fits in.

Polypropylene (PP): The Workhorse for Chemical Handling

PP Sheets Thailand

Polypropylene is the most cost-effective of the three materials, and it earns its place in fab and data center construction through excellent chemical resistance, low weight, and reliable weldability. It's a common choice for chemical waste tanks, exhaust ductwork, and fume scrubber systems, the supporting infrastructure that keeps a fab or data center's chemical processes safe and compliant.

Within the SIMONA range, SIMONA PP-H AlphaPlus is a specially engineered version of standard PP-H (homopolymer polypropylene), built specifically for industrial tank and plant engineering. Compared to standard PP-H, it offers a finer, more stable crystalline structure that translates into real performance gains: roughly double the rigidity at 100°C compared to standard material, improved impact resistance at low temperatures, and a service life of over 1,500 hours in long-term stress testing, compared to 700 to 800 hours for standard PP-H. It also welds more reliably, which matters enormously for tanks and ductwork where a weld failure means a leak. For facilities running continuous chemical processes, that extra margin of safety is exactly why it's specified over standard-grade PP.

PVDF: FM 4910-Rated Purity and Chemical Resistance

PVDF Sheets Thailand

PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) is one of the named materials that passes FM 4910 testing, which is precisely why it's trusted for cleanroom tool construction and other applications inside semiconductor fabs and data centers. SIMONA PVDF is rated for continuous use from -30°C to 140°C, resists impact without breaking even under demanding test conditions, and offers strong electrical insulation, useful anywhere the material sits near sensitive electronics. It's also certified food-safe under both EU and FDA standards.

PVDF Thailand

Beyond fab tools and equipment, PVDF plays a critical role in chemical tank and piping construction. This is where SIMONA's specialty PVDF-NK liner material becomes especially relevant to semiconductor facilities: it uses a polyacrylonitrile (PAN) backing engineered for outstanding resistance to hydrofluoric acid (HF) and hydrochloric acid (HCl), two chemicals used extensively in semiconductor wafer etching and cleaning processes. PVDF-NK liners bond to steel or composite structures to create a long-term corrosion barrier, protecting the tanks and piping that carry these aggressive process chemicals throughout a

fab.

ECTFE: The Toughest, Widest-Range Option

ECTFE (sold under trade names like Halar) is the other material explicitly named in cleanroom fire-safety standards, and it brings some of the strongest mechanical properties of the three. ECTFE offers an exceptionally wide service temperature range, from -40°C to 150°C, the widest of the materials covered here, along with notched impact strength that is dramatically higher than PVDF's, meaning it resists cracking under far more demanding mechanical stress. It also carries a low-flammability fire rating and strong electrical insulation properties.

Like PVDF, ECTFE is available from SIMONA in a specialty backed-liner format (ECTFE-NK), also using the same advanced PAN backing for HF and HCl resistance. Where a facility needs the absolute toughest, most temperature-stable liner or component material, especially for outdoor installations or equipment exposed to significant temperature swings, ECTFE is often the material of choice.

Double Containment for Hazardous Chemical Delivery

Semiconductor fabs handle what the industry calls hazardous production materials (HPMs), the acids, solvents, and process gases used in wafer fabrication, and fire and building codes typically require secondary containment for bulk chemical delivery lines carrying these materials: essentially a pipe within a pipe, so any leak from the inner line is caught before it can escape into the facility. SIMONA offers this as a complete system, SIMODUAL² double containment piping, available in PP/PE, PVDF/PE, and PE/PE combinations joined by cascade welding. For facilities distributing bulk process chemicals from a central supply point to individual tools, this kind of system-level solution is often as important as the base sheet or tank material itself.
